We are all looking for ways to save money but at the same time help our planet. By making a few small changes to the way you use energy could make a difference to your next energy bill.

Here are some tips to help you reduce your energy consumption, enabling you to save money and start having a positive impact on the global environment.

  1. Use inverter type air-conditioners that are sized, installed and used in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations – they’ll use up to 40% less energy than other air-conditioners.
  2. Unless the mercury hits 30˚C, try and use fans to cool your home instead of the air conditioner.
  3. Heating or cooling the whole house can be expensive. Where possible, shut doors to areas you are not using and only heat or cool the rooms you spend the most time in.
  4. Make sure your curtains or blinds seal your windows properly, and keep your curtains closed at night, and during the day when there is a heat-wave. Block draughts around doors and windows to stop air leaking out, or in.
  5. Buy appliances with a good energy rating. The more stars, the better – but think about size first. Often it’s easier for a larger model to be more efficient (and therefore have more stars) than a smaller one. However, since it is bigger, its overall energy consumption is usually higher.
  6. Use lamps or spotlights, if you only need a small amount of light, use lamps or spotlights instead of main lights.
  7. Use the economy cycle for everyday washing and only run the dishwasher when it’s full. This helps save water too.
  8. Up to 10% of your electricity could be used by gadgets and appliances that are on standby. A standby power controller will automatically reduce standby time and switch appliances off when not in use.
  9. Stick to short, four-minute showers. You’ll save water, energy and money.
  10. Consider using outdoor solar lights for your garden or outdoor areas.
